We grow Mapacho (Aztec/Indian/Hopi Tobacco / 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖 𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖) mainly as an organic insecticide/companion plant (nicotine is a natural insect repellent) but have decided to make it available for purchase this year. It has high spiritual value and is used traditionally in ceremonial activities. Considered to be one of the earliest cultivated plants, this tobacco species is native to the Andes Mountains and used by South American shamans as an essential ingredient for ceremonies – it’s considered a “master plant of first importance” and the “king of plants.”
Ingredients: 4 grams cured Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica).
IMPORTANT NOTE: 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖 𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖 has up to 10 times more nicotine than Nicotiana tabacum, the species used in commercial cigarettes. Additionally, it contains psychoactive alkaloids that can induce visionary states.
BACKGROUND: it was over 10 years ago when we received seeds for this plant from a seed saver participant at the Owingeh Ta Pueblos y Semillas Seed Exchange hosted by the NM Food and Seed Sovereignty Alliance. If you’re interested in cultivating this sacred plant, feel free to reach out to us – we’re happy to share seeds with as many growers as we can.
