Description
Tulsi means “the incomparable one” in Sanskrit and it’s certainly worthy of that endearing description. Tulsi, or Holy Basil, is one of our favorite non-native herbs that we grow in our herb gardens. Its medicinal actions ultimately have a deep influence on the mind, body, and soul, making it a touchstone remedy. It’s probably best known for its use as an adaptogenic nerve tonic – it has an uplifting effect on the heart and mind. Additionally, it’s a carminative, circulatory stimulant, and antispasmodic. It’s also commonly used to help regulate blood sugar for Type II diabetics. It’s a very warming herb that can bring warmth into a cold, depressed, weakened and burned out nervous system.
Our spagyric* tincture is made with Tulsi/Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) from our herb gardens. We make our tincture with fresh harvested herb to maximize the retention of the plant’s volatile oils (much of the volatile oil content evaporates once dried). These volatile oils are primary constituents responsible for tulsi’s carminative, digestive stimulating, respiratory expectorant, circulatory stimulant, and antispasmodic properties.
Contradindications: if pregnant consult your health practitioner before taking tulsi. Avoid tulsi for a couple of weeks before and after a surgery as there is some evidence showing that it may slow blood clotting.
*A spagyric is an alchemical procedure in which you purify the strained Body (plant material) by Fire in a process called calcination order to add it back to the tincture solution in a process called the “Chymical Wedding.” It’s a reunion of the plant medicine’s post-purified Body with its Soul and Spirit. Spagyrics are considered by alchemists to be the most “whole-istic” version of a plant medicine, making it a more potent version of a tincture.
